Bellevue Healthcare’s newly opened Moscow showroom was featured in the Moscow Daily News, including an interview with Store Manager Stuart Kelly.

The employees at Bellevue Healthcare, located at the former Staples building on Warbonnet Drive in Moscow, have what at first glance is an unenviable job.

A large part of their duties includes driving to homes where someone is in hospice care to deliver and assemble medical supplies.

“All of us have set up hospital beds for people who are dying,” Moscow Branch Manager Stuart Kelly said.

He said being part of that experience gives them valuable perspective about why their service exists.

“It makes you a little more alert to how you do things and why you do things,” he said…

He hopes more people will become aware that Bellevue Healthcare is an option for them, as many people don’t know where to turn if they or a loved one need a wheelchair or a walker.

Most, he said, assume they can only order from companies in larger cities, and many are also unsure what they can afford under their insurance or Medicare. He encourages them to walk into the Moscow store and talk to the employees about their options.

With their new location, he believes Bellevue Healthcare will become a familiar asset on the Palouse.

“We’re here for the long term,” he said.

BHC Truly Local

Bellevue Healthcare ATP Dave Kruse of Portland was recently featured in Bob Vogel’s article “The True Cost of Wheelchairs and Components” for New Mobility magazine. The article examines the factors behind the cost of complex rehab technology.

“It takes a huge amount of time, driving and paperwork to get a piece of equipment to a client,” says Kruse. “For each ATP, we employ three full-time office support people.” This includes a direct support specialist who knows insurance coding, how it is handled, what documents are required, and what each type of insurance will and won’t pay for. Also, a funding coordinator, and a reimbursement specialist.”

Dave Kruse has been actively involved both nationally and locally in the development of the Complex Rehabilitation industry for the last forty years and has served as Treasurer and President on the NRRTS board. He provided valuable insight into the diligence and dedication Assistive Technology Professionals (ATPs) provide their clients.  “If I get a phone call from a client who needs a repair or has a flat tire on a power chair, I will go fix it after-hours or on a Saturday because I know they won’t be moving until I handle it. This usually costs me, not only time away from my family, but also because Medicare doesn’t reimburse calls to fix a flat tire. Other insurance companies require a preauthorization — how do you get a pre-auth on somebody’s broken down chair on a weekend? This is an industry you get into because you care about helping people.”

The Bellevue Way: Northwest provider remains ‘fiercely independent’

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Bellevue Healthcare is repositioning itself to color in more of its regional footprint, say company execs.

“As we get to a certain scale, we have to refocus on how we get more growth,” said Joel Gallion, president.

The provider in January shook up its executive team and added a retail location in Redmond, Wash. In addition to Gallion’s appointment as president, Peter Norman will transition from president to CEO; Josh Moritz has been named executive vice president of internal operations; and Bryce Schaffner has been named executive vice president of business development.

Although most of Bellevue’s 17 locations are in Washington state, the provider also has a small presence in Idaho, California and Oregon, all areas where Gallion says the company could do more.

“I think we have a lot of growth opportunity just in our existing footprint,” he said.

There’s also a lot of opportunity embedded in Bellevue’s product mix. The provider offers a full line of home medical, mobility and respiratory equipment and services, as well as complex rehab and home accessibility, but not in every location. For example, only its Portland, Ore., location does complex rehab.

“Even in the markets we are in, we have a lot of growing we can do without ever opening up another location,” Gallion said.

These strategic moves will build on a foundation Bellevue has built in not only a diversified product mix but also a diversified payer mix.

“We’ve never been Medicare dependent,” Gallion said. “When you get too dependent on one channel for revenue it’s not sustainable.”

That foundation also includes a tradition of hiring college graduates into entry-level positions and bringing them up through the system.

“We teach them ‘the Bellevue Way,’ which gives us the ability to train and teach,” he said. “Wherever they end up in the company, they have a great base of knowledge. Any one of my managers can deliver a bed or trouble shoot and oxygen concentrator.”

Gallion himself came up through the ranks at Bellevue and has seen a lot of changes in his 12 years in the industry. He’s particularly troubled by the rampant consolidation he’s seeing, which, along with continual drops in reimbursement, make it tough for independent providers to survive.

“Every day there’s another strong industry player that’s been gobbled up,” said Gallion. “We’re fiercely independent and will remain so.”

Bellevue Healthcare kicked off 2016 with a new headquarters, retail location, and changes to its executive team. Bellevue Healthcare’s new headquarters is located in Redmond, Washington. A connect retail showroom will be opening in February 2016, which will be BHC’s 17th location.

Our executive team changes: Joel Gallion, a 13-year veteran with the company, is now President. The former President and co-founder Peter Norman will transition to CEO. Josh Moritz is now executive Vice President of Internal Operations. Bryce Schaffner is now executive Vice President of Business Development.

The changes will allow Bellevue to look for strategic growth opportunities.
