Mask Basics

Generally, PAP masks consist of three key parts: frame, cushion and headgear. Many also come with an elbow or swivel attachment, or maybe a short hose on this elbow, to then attach to the primary hose.

Below are two example mask diagrams. One with a more traditional front elbow mount and one with the elbow mount on top of the head.

Styles of Masks

Mask styles can be categorized based on their contact points on the wearer’s face. The most common types are as follows:

  • Utilizes the nose and mouth for breathing
  • Ideal for people who breath out of their mouth while sleeping
  • Includes versions that go over the bridge of the nose or hybrid styles that have an under-the-nose cushion
  • Utilizes just the user’s nose
  • Suited for people who breath out of their nose only
  • Allows for better visibility than a full face mask
  • Versions include traditional style that encloses the nose and under-the-nose style
  • Pillow cushions seal at the base each nostril
  • Minimal and lightweight construction
  • Ideal for people who find other mask types claustrophobic
  • Provides greater visibility for those who want to read or watch tv in bed
